Thoughts on 6+1+1 becoming permanent

  • ...or semi-permanent until we go to 16 or beyond. I have to say as a fan I'd want it like Les wants it. Rotating 2 in the opposite division from here on out...not because of fairness or "disproportion" but that I'd like more opportunity to visit Eastern division schools when we play them. That whole conquest of visiting all the SEC stadiums becomes just that more difficult rotating home/away among 7 cross division schools. Quite possibly could be 13-15 years to cycle around to a particular away venue. I don't really get the whole clinging to the cross division rivalry either. How are those games much more traditional than the ones you play in your own division every year. The SEC is changing, make some new traditions...we still have plenty.

All the argument is probably moot though. If we don't have 16 within the next year, it will definitely happen within the next 5.

I agree, Bama-Tenn or LSU-Fla aren't any more important than Texas-TAMU was. Aren't those the only real cross-divisional rivalry games?

I'd include aub/ga in that list.
I agree that it makes it harder for seeing every stadium, but I like having permanent cross games. To us Kentucky is not a sure fire rival, but ut fans would rather leave the conference than not play bama each year. The sec doesn't want to lose that game either, it is a garuntee to pack over 100,000 people in a stadium, no matter which campus the game on. Too much money to be made.
The Lsu fans also feel more strongly about the Florida game than Les does and wouldn't want to lose it.

  • Remember Tx and TA&M are no longer in the same conference therefore making it important but with less significance. Those two teams have been legitimate rivals for a long time. As for Bama and Tn, trust me when I say this is a real rivalry. It is Tn. biggest and it is right up there for Bama fans. I grew up in Alabama and they cannot stand the Vols and took great pride in helping run Fulmer off. Remember too, that Tn was instumental in getting Alabama on probation. At one time there was a warrant for Fulmers arrest if he came into the state of Alabama. Yep, this is a rivalry that needs to stay, in my opinion. Thanks for reading

  • I know that playing Kentucky every year benefits MSU, but I like the idea of rotating the east teams. If MSU does reach that elite level, it's unfair to Bama and LSU that MSU gets that easy win.

  • I agree with JShort, although for a different reason...

I want to go to Athens more than one more time before I'm 40...

Auburn v UGA is the historic rivalry in the conference.

Fair enough, as long as they don't split Ole Miss and LSU...that's a true rivalry lol

  • Miles and his comment about MSU gaining an advantage .... what about LSU that can pay any lower D1 team $1 million dollars to play at LSU? Heck, MSU has to schedule a home and away game to get another lower D1 school. Our payout for schools to come to MSU is much less. LSU has the stadium, one major university in the state of Louisiana, and most fans in the state support LSU regardless of where they went to school.

I think LSU must be worried about a MSU getting better. This disproportion is a joke.

When we have 90k in our stadium and can buy any home game, I will then reconsider Les Miles comments.

Grow up Miles! You got your butts handed to you vs. Alabama in your own home state! Quit whining and let's play some football.

Also, I guess Miles will whine for his baseball team losing 3 of 5 games to MSU.

  • I would prefer the rotating schedule. If certain teams want to play each year they can schedule a game outside the 8 regular games and have it not count as an SEC game similar to what we do in baseball vs TSUN.

  • I think the positives for us in keeping UK on as a permanent far outweigh the negatives in only getting to see another East team in DWS or in their stadium once every 12 years.

I'm at a point where those teams no longer "scare" me, but you can bet Fla will be back sooner or later, UGA isn't going anywhere with the talent base they have in their state, UT will prolly be up & down, but could return to old form w the right coach, USCe has planted a flag as an upper tier school under the OBC. I would MUCH rather have UK(a team we should beat at least 7/10) & one of those schools over 2 in one year. A skedj w/ our div foes plus any combo of UF, UGA, or USCe is nearly unmanageable.

We need wins, not moral victories, which is what that UK game gives us. Which sounds more logical to you: a permanent w UK v LSU & MSU v UF or the way it's currently proposed? It just makes sense unless you could go to a 9 game league skedj, which won't happen bc that will decrease the bowl eligible teams in the Conf(loses $) & jeopardizes the top teams ability to make the final 4(1 more SEC game=1 more chance to slip up).
