The Wide-9

I don't know if anyone is familiar with the Wide-9. the Eagles use it, but what would everyone think about Wilson studying that D-Line alignment and employing it in the future. You have to have the right personnel, but I think it's an interesting alignment.

I think it's great for rushing the passer if you have the right players, but I'm not sure it's that good against the run. The eagles had one of the worst run Ds in the league last year. Granted, that was partly due to poor LB play, so it will be interesting to see how they do against the run with an improved LB core this year. I don't think we have the personnel to run it against competent offense coordinator.

I'd rather see Joe Lee "no socks" Dunn's smear the queer defense. It didn't work much against spreads though.

Having coached football for years, I do believe that running plays between the tackles of the so called wide 9 or the old Georgia 60 defense that Erk Russell ran, will create problems for that defense. I think traps, ISo's, counters and well designed options will create huge running angles at different levels. As a def. coordinator when I coached, my philosiphy was to protect from inside out first and foremost. I always counted the sidelines as 2 extra men for me on def. All they (offense) have to do is step on either sideline and the tackle has been made.

Buddy Ryan's 46 was all about stopping the run and pressure from everywhere...you never knew where it was coming from...it's nothing more than a 4-3 on roids....it pretty much takes away a run game...and if you have some lock down CB's you really have something going on with it.
The wide 9 is more solid for a small DL to get pressure on the QB...but you have such large gaps you will get killed in the run game...case and point the Eagles in 2011...got so bad the Eagles fans starting chanting to get ride of the wide 9 during a game.
The great thing about this is Wilson is to smart to ever run a wide 9 look in the SEC...we'll have RB's,FB's QB's going for 100yards against it/
