So I had to argue with a "Bear" friend about...

  • Tyler being a better NFL prospect than Romero Miller. I'll post my arguments and if I'm wrong about any of it, please correct me. I thought it was interesting that he brought this up...

Feel free to add to either side of the argument shrug

    Here was my reasonings:

    Tyler- 6'4 225 lbs > Romero - 6'0 190 lbs

    Tyler's arm strength >>>> Romero's

    Tyler's accuracy > Romero's

    Tyler's coaching > Romero's

The skill factors aren't even close IMO. Tyler hasn't been thrown to the wolves is why you haven't seen much of him and has shown very good potential the little bit he has played. Romero floated the ball a whole lot, Tyler has a Shotgun for an arm.

If you're comparing their NFL upsides, you know very little if you think Romero is remotely close to Tyler's NFL skills. Tyler may or may not pan out, but you compare the two and ask yourself which player would get the first look from an NFL team... The choice is easy.

Cutcliffe is a pretty good QB coach and actually might have better credentials in that area than Mullen. He coached Eli and Peyton. I don't quite remember the overlap, but I think he coached Erik Ainge for a bit. He was a solid college QB.

People always talk about who Mullen has coached. The only guy that has done much at the NFL level is maybe Tebow. Smith had a solid 2011, but he has been a disappointment for the most part. I say that as a 49er fan.

So, Cutcliffe has the edge in my opinion. The other points are solid though.

I'm all for the hype on Tyler, but don't put the cart before the horse. MSU needs him to be a draftable quarterback, but he has to prove it on the field first.

  • Mullen has brought Tyler a long way in his passing quickness. We'll know in a few months or maybe a year+ whether Tyler looks to be an NFL QB. Miller wasn't accurate enough to be a pro QB, regardless of any other qualifications. If Tyler Russell shows well the next two seasons, he seems to have the tools to make someone in the NFL pay him on Sundays. His passing is much better now compared to 15 months ago. We'll find out on the field, starting soon, to see what we have at QB. Romero was a fairly good college QB due to his mobility, but certainly he wasn't exceptional.

  • JSizzle,

Alex Smith was a 2-star nobody that Mullen helped mold into the 1st pick of the draft. Smith has had a new OC every year he has been in the NFL- it's damn hard to improve when you keep starting over every season.

Hell, just the fact that Mullen got him drafted 1st overall tells you what a good job he did with him

What successful QB other than the children of Archie Manning has Cutcliffe coached up? If you mention Ainge, I think Alex Smith trumps Ainge.
