Sly Croom

He was just a terrible, terrible HC- I cant thank Greg Byrne enough for holding him to his statement- "I'll retire before I run the Spread offense"

Stupid statement after stupid statement showed just how far over his head he really was- NC must think they are in really bad trouble if they are thinking of hiring him

I would be shocked if UNC thinking about hiring him.

  • I was worried during his press conference when he said that he would never fire an assistant. That should have been a red flag.

  • Guys, are we saying that Croom should never get another head coaching job just because he had a not so good run at state. A program that was at the bottom when he arrived. I think that is being a little unfair. Maybe he as learned from his mistakes and will be a better head coach. He is not the first coach that had a bad run at state. Atleast he had one winning season.

First of all he did nothing go show he was a good head coach. He doesn't like to recruit, and doesn't like firing his buddies when they suck at their job.

And he didn't have one winning season. Ellis Johnson did

  • He was loyal to a fault. There are worse qualities. If he hired a quality offensive coordinator and let him work he could be successful. Not like BCS champion successful but consistent Music City bowl champs successful. He is a good man and got better as a recruiter. Never improved in his grasp of college offensive football.

  • He may have gotten better, but odds are that he would be just as bad somewhere else.

If you are a school like UNC, why would you take that chance?

    Todd4State

  • In a word no. i do feel like he is a good man though. I wouldnt hire him but he is a good man

I'd like to see more black head coaches get their shot when they are ready- hiring Crooms wont help other guys. He is a hardheaded old man that refuses to be flexible enough to do what it takes to win. Thats why he needs to stay a position coach and not be in control of a major program

  • Probably NC is not really considering Croom. There are plenty of competent coaches who would clean up a program as a routine part of the job, not as some remarkable extra undertaking. Does anyone think Dan Mullen would have a mess to coach? Dooley at TN won't either. The best coaches won't tolerate a mess to try to coach in. They don't want it and don't have to suffer in that environment and won't tolerate it if they were to take the job with a situation like at NC. My guess is that a few alumni at NC who haven't thought the situation out very well may have been approached by Croom. Could also be that no good coach wants the job under the present conditions, and so somebody is musing about Croom.

  • If I was Croom, I wouldn't want to fool with another college job. Just coach RB's in the NFL.

He seems a lot happier now with the Rams than he did when he was at MSU.

The only job I could see him taking in college is at Alabama as a position coach or maybe some administrative position at Alabama like what Felker has with us.

  • I didn't know Ellis Johnson was the head coach. LOL!!! Look I think Croom also did a bad job at state but I also believe people should get a second chance. If Croom would have had a real OC maybe things would have been different, but yes I do understand that it was Croom that chose him and wouldn't fire him. It's doesn't matter to me if Croom was black, white or green I just believe in second chances.

You know as well as I do the defense carried the 2007 team. It's funny that after Johnson leaves the defense wasn't nearly as good

  • I resented Croom for running Ellis Johnson off. He was about the only thing we had to push the team forward at all. Croom was incompetent, egotistical and largely a phoney. He had no head coaching experience. He could have started at South Alabama or Alcorn, maybe, but it's likely he would have been a failure there, too. He had no claim to fame other than he was the only black head coach in the SEC, and he had many interviews along that line, not about his successes in coaching teams somewhere he'd been before. We basically got nothing for having made him a multi-millionaire.

  • When 3yearoldfarley was in the hospital having his heart surgery, Gregg Ellis wrote an article about him. I heard from several people from State at that time. Greg Byrne called to check on him, Woody and Ellis emailed me, Stansbury sent him a basketball, and several others around campus and the State family all reached out. I was told by someone very close to the situation that Croom was made aware and he was just too busy to even write an email or a 1 minute phone call. If he didn't think it was going to benefit him directly, Sly didn't give a shit.

  • Ask guys like Bobo and Littlejohn about Sly. He was incompetent. Period. If you are incompetent, at least try to get some guys in who can carry you: Ellis Johnson did and Woody didn't. After 5 years of terrible football where we lost to UAB, Tulane, La Tech and Maine, he should never get a sniff of a HC job ever again.

To be fair his steering wheel on his golf cart did not have a big enough area for him to write a letter on
