  • Penn State will lose 10 initial scholarships and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period.

Penn State Penalties Include $60 Million Fine and Bowl Ban - NYTimes.com

The N.C.A.A. banned the football program from bowl play for four years and vacated wins from 1998 to 2011 in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.

  • It's vacate all wins from '98 onwards, your roster is reduced by 20 to 65 for the next four years, and you can't sign more than 15 players in a class for the next four years.
They'll return to a competitive level sometime around 2019.

  • I am still in shock over how PSU fans are reacting. They are crucifying their current university president, the guy that inherited this egregious situation. They don't get that this whole thing is necessary for the long term health of everyone and everything involved with Penn State. If these folks truly loved their school, they would want to do anything they could to improve its reputation with the world at this time. Fighting NCAA sanctions should be the least of their worries. They are going to get hit with trials and lawsuits much worse than this punishment. Football is great, but there is more to life and college than sports.

The postseason ban and the scholarship restrictions essentially prevent the program from fielding a team that can be competitive in the Big Ten. The N.C.A.A. will also allow Penn State players to transfer to another university, where they can play immediately, inviting the possibility of a mass exodus. • Yep, nevermind. The ESPN graphic I saw had it wrong. Guess it's ALL wins, not just bowl wins.

You can argue that USC is back and vying for a National Championship again this year just as they are starting to get out of their penalties, but Penn State has a very different stigma that is going to stick and affect them for longer. They were hurting before the penalties.

    This is not true.

What USC did was appeal only part of their sanctions. They appealed the scholarship reductions, and it prolonged their implementation by an extra 2 years. So, while they were on bowl ban, they still had full signing privileges. Now that they are off bowl ban, they are losing 10 scholarships/yr(for a max of 75 total and 15/yr), over the next 3 years, starting this season. Their signing class is already completely full. So, USC's real penalty hasn't even hit yet. They just managed to get a 1 year window where they can seriously compete, before falling on their face beginning next year.

I popped over there too and couldn't believe it either. I've never seen more morally or ethically challenged people in my life. Funny thing though, it seems most of the sympathetic post from other schools were from bama fans. Figures

Bad publicity for any NFL talent period. No bowls. And horrible stigma.

Can they keep the current players that are already on scholarship?

This will kill their current class too.

I'm guessing Penn St. will recruit heavily in the San Francisco area.
