My thoughts on the state of the MSU basketball program:

  • 1. As much as I liked Stansbury as a person, it was just his time to go. I was behind him 100% until last year. He hasn't had total control of the program in a while now, but IMO the Sidney/Bailey saga was the beginning of the end. Sidney should been sent packing. Sidney's attitude spread throughout the entire locker room and the hope for any kind of consistent chemistry was lost.

    2. While some of you call Stans a great recruiter, I disagree. IMO you have to get the players to campus and keep them there before you can get that tag put on you. I believe whole heartedly that the final judgement of a recruit is based on his time on campus and not on the stars before he ever hits the floor. Rick Ray will recruit players who want to be here and that want to work hard at being the best they can be.

    3. You may have seen Rodney Hood in a different aspect, but I could see right through him. Hood was a selfish guy and him taking the easy way out and transferring is just further proof of that. This is a guy that was "suppose" to be a legacy here. Rodney grew up a Bulldog, became a Bulldog, then quit on all of Bulldog nation. You would have had to carry me out in a casket, had I been in his shoes. I would have been excited to see change. I would have been excited to finally have to work hard and become a better basketball player. I know some of you saw Rodney as a future star, but he was and is never going to be a star at any level. I just didn't see what everyone else saw. A good college basketball player, yes, a star, no. There's more to being a great basketball player than talent alone. I did see talent, but not star talent. People him leaving was not a major set back, only minor.

    Verdict:
While some of you are disappointed in the Rick Ray hire, I feel we have gotten a steal. Every coach that has been asked about him consistently give the same assessment. Hard worker, knows the game, disciplinarian, great with the X's and O's and a good recruiter. He may not pan out, but it won't be because of lack of hard work and discipline. In the end I truly think you are going to be happy with Coach Ray. Let's get behind him 100% and remember, this is OUR STATE.

  • I completely agree about Rodney not being a star. I have been saying that for a while now. He is just a solid player that takes care of the ball and plays decent defense. He averaged 10 pts and 5 rbs while playing 32 min per game... that is not very good production.

I wish he would have stayed but it really doesn't hurt that much production wise.

Only time will tell whether your theory is correct or not. Nobody has ever said that Sidney wasn't the downfall but I will also remind you that in 100 years MSU has had 17 seasons where they won 20+ games. Stansbury has more than anybody so we shall see if that can be matched and while the Sidney years have been a disaster, the whole body of work is probably going to be better than anybody we would have hired with our budget limitations and recruiting to Starkville. If it was so easy, Ray would have already signed 2 or 3 and it is time to get off Rodney's back. He signed with a coach and left when he did. it happens all the time and I assure you, Ray would give his left gonad to have him back.

I hate Hood transfered and I hope he wins the same amount of games as ole miss football. But, his production (10 and 5) was done as true freshman and as a role player to 3 other guys that were "headliners". Hood would have been one of the best at MSU had he stayed 2 or 3 more years.

  • There is a possibility Hood might stay so all you folks who have beat on him get ready to change your tune. I hope he does stay and if he does, he will be our best player, book it!

Cool, since you know everything that Rodney went through, please elaborate. Or are you making a statement from the outside looking in? Also are you saying that when you were 17,18 you were more mature than Rodney? Even though everywhere he turned he had people telling him what to do, classmates, Facebook, twitter, text messages, phone calls, reporters wanting to know his next move, AAU friends wanting him to come to their school. Maybe Stansbury told Rodney I'll be your coach for 4 years, maybe he felt betrayed by the man who's been recruiting him since jr high? Why must we bash this kid EVERYDAY? Walter sharpe, Ben hansbrough, Shawn long, Romero osby, Gerry Ervin, obviously there's something that's not visible from the outside that made all these kids transfer. I hope he's taken #1 in the NBA LOTTERY one day.

  • 4 of Stansbury's 20-win seasons were NIT appearances. Over 1/3 of college basketball teams win 20 games. Teams play more games than they used to. 20 wins isnt a big deal anymore- that number has moved to 25.

Half the SEC won 20 or more games this season

To match Stansbury- all the Ray has to do is make 2 NCAA Tourneys in the next 7 years, just like Stands did in his last 7 seasons. And then he only has to go 1-2 in those 2 NCAA appearances. The bar isnt set very high

    Coach34

  • I'd rather have 20 win NIT seasons than the losing seasons we will have the next 2 or 3 years.

Ray has the deck stacked against him unlike anything Stan's ever had. I highly doubt that Ray will be here 7 years from now. If he loses he'll be fired but if he is successful and wins he'll be out of Starkville on the first decent offer he gets.

And coach if we can't get to 20 wins then your prognosis means nothing. We all know you are happy, now, let's see if someone can do better and I will wait to see how much you will bash the cupcake preseason schedules we will probably play for the next 4 years. If Hood comes back, it will be because he wants to stay and I have sources that have told me he is considering staying but until then, I am still waiting for our first signee other than the ones we already had.

  • Coastdawg how reliable are your guys that are giving you info on Hood possibly staying?

  • I was not bashing the kid. I simply said he quit on
the school he grew up loving. That is facts, not assumptions. Rodney may be a great kid, but he wasn't faithful to Bulldog nation. He signed to play Basketball for Mississippi State University and as a lifetime Bulldog, he should have held to it. I truly wish him the best, I really do, but he is not going to be a star. I'll man up and say I'm wrong if he ever becomes one. I will also go on record and say I pray that he proves me wrong. I will not wish bad on any 18-19 year old kid.

He'll get to 20 wins after we rebuild a couple of seasons. Let's remember we are in this mess because of Stansbury.

And that is just what happens when coaches get to the end of their time- Jackie was retired because of his last 3 seasons, not his first 10. Polk was led into retirement because he knew he had let the program bottom out and he didnt have the desire to get out there to recruit and bring it back. You have to actually credit Stricklin, because he actually got Stansbury out a year early before the losing was going to really start and the program bottom out.

You know as well as I do it's damn hard to recruit this time of year. There arent very many BCS-caliber players left out there to sign. Ray is going to be judged from next April forward. This next 12 months is the Stands mess he has endure and clean up. He is already changing the mentality of the program- and that is great news for us. At least we are finally moving in the right direction.

Most kids sign a scholarship to play a certain sport because ot the coach, not the university...been through it myself and understand how Hood feels, if you've not been throught it yourself, dont assume you know what others are thinking or feeling.

  • MSU basketball quit on Hood as well. If the company you work for changes bosses and your coworkers are laid off or leave for other jobs and you get a better offer and you turn it down to stay loyal instead of bettering your situation, then IMO, you are illogical. I dont understand you fans blinded by your love for State. This isnt CJ Johnson selling his soul to go to a worse situation for a Chevy truck and costing HIS future of millions in the future. I dont wish him well. This is a kid who (and i said this 2 years ago that Hoood was making a mistake signing with State) bought into the recruiting speak of we are building something great here at MSU and find out later that the program is in the worst shape its been in forever. And yall are mad about him jumpoing out the window of this burning building? And your only justification is well, when it was just smoke, he said he would stick around. Well that smoke has turned into a gasoline fire and i cant blame him for leaving. Sad part is, ones that are blaming him aren't even renewing your season tickets or buying them all together. I wish Rodney well. And one more point, he's definitely not a superstar that can carry a team one on one but he still has NBA potential. That's even more reaon to go to a better situation (a team with a talented PG) than stay here at MSU where you cant maximize your skill set with no point guard. Take off your maroon glasses and think if this was your child for a second. This isnt a quitting situation. This is a situation where you are bettering your situation. This reminds me of hood people that get mad at others for moing out the hood (no pun intended) to the suburbs and people call them sell outs cause they are turning their back on their people and not sticking around to help the old hood when they need them the most. Ridiculous!
