My recruiting class break down

  • Im going to do this player by player. I am going to warn you I am not a Kool Aid drinker and this is just my opinion. I welcome anybody that has differing opinions and discussion.

Quay Evans- Has the tools to be an NFL defensive tackle. Rare blend of size and speed. Has some motor and off the field issues. If he can get a steady dose of act right and buys in he is an All SEC caliber talent all day long. (I saw him in camp numerous times and at a jamboree)

Denico Autry - Instant impact from a pass rushing standpoint. Will give us what we lacked last year in that department immediately. Plays with an attitude. Will need to improve against the run but he is the real deal. (I saw him play in person twice)

Nick James - I only saw him at the big dawg camp. I was shocked really really move well for a big man. Plays with a motor and mean. Again needs a steady dose of act right. If he buys in hes a Josh Boyd Caliber player.

Will Redmond - I never really saw him work out. I have been around him on some jr days and different visits. He is very respectful. I can also say that he was very highly thought of by other college coaches. This leads me to believe he will be the real deal. He was badly wanted by TN among others.

Beniquez Brown - I had him at bama camp. He looked a little stiff. Good player but Im not sure he is a four star. He struggled with some lateral movement. He is a really good kid. Going from film he is better than he showed at that camp. Im glad we got him for sure but I think hes gonna be more of a solid starter type than an All SEC type.

Devon Desper - I coached against him in a game and had him at camp. Hes a road grader. Will be a two-three year starter for us in the middle of our OLine. Will never be too flashy or All conference but will be an important piece of the puzzle for us. JC Brignone type.

Richie Brown - Saw him at the big dawg camp. He has all the tools. I cant speak on how good of a football player he is because its so hard to analyze line backers in shorts and t shirts. He can run really run. Has good lateral movement. He is high character kid that comes from a good family. He seems to be smart kid. I think he will be very good for us.

Xavier Grindle - I have seen him at camp only. He is small. He can run but he is small. I think size will hinder him from being a star. Hes one I could see getting lost in the shuffle. Not a bad player but not a slam dunk either.

AJ Jefferson - I saw him in state championship game a few years ago and at big dawg camp. He is one I am not very high on. I mean hes explosive but hes short and his frame will limit his ability to put on weight. He is gonna be like Devin Jones (whom I coached and love to death). A DT that will never be able to comfortably carry DT weight. Role Player

Jordan Washigton - I have never seen have no idea

Cole Carter - I have seen him at a few different camps. I am higher on this kid than a lot. He is very athletic for a guy his size. He doesnt shy away from contact. Now he is weak and needs badly to put on weight but he has great feet which you cant teach. He is a project with upside. Probably never a star but a solid starter for us. Think Addison Lawrence.

Brandon Holloway - I saw him at a camp. He can fly I mean absolutely fly. Most people are picking him as their sleeper because of this. I will caution you that being able to fly and being an SEC player is two totally different things. This kid may end up great but rest assured Florida and Florida State knew he could fly and they passed on him. The jury is out but he does have one thing you cant teach.

Addarius Perkins - I like him a lot. Saw him at the all star game. He is one of my sleepers. Not an all sec type put a really good two/ three year starter for us somewhere. I think he is playmaker.

Cedric Jiles - had him a two different camps. I like him. I dont love him but I like him. He is a little stiff in the hips for my liking in a corner. Not to the point that I think he will never start at state but he has some things to work on flexibility wise. I think he will be a solid starter at corner for us. Think Damien Anderson maybe a little better

Nelson Adams - I have seen him in person a few times. Brandon played him at LB and I was never impressed with him there. He was painfully too big for that spot and it made him look unathletic because he was out of position. I dont think hes an awful player but I think with the other talent we brought in at his spot he could get lost in the shuffle.

Quadry Antoine - Had him at camp. Hes a big hitter. Moves adequately. Will need to work on coverage but he will be a fan favorite because he is going to kill receivers. I hope he can stay healthy because hitting people in the SEC like that is a different animal. Nickoe Whitly clone

Kivon Coleman - I havent seen him in person but his film I like a lot. He has great great closing speed and plays with an attitude. He is my sleeper.

Fredrick Brown - Had him at camp and saw him at the all star game. Hes kind of a reach. I have seen him look like a million bucks and then seen him look awful. Alot of his problem is he has gotten minimal coaching and played for an awful team. He may end up great but they are starting from scratch with him.

Devon Bell - I coached him in seventh grade when he was TE. From all accounts and what I have seen in person he can boom the football. I will say this though when Eric Richards was at Warren Central I was there and he could freaking kick the football. It never panned out for him though. Kickers are such an inexact science and its so mental its hard to make a prediction. Devon is as solid of kicker you will find coming out of high school hopefully it will transfer into being a great college kicker.

Charles Siddoway - I have obviously never seen him. What I can say is he is the guy that hevesy wanted from the beginning. When everyone else was talking about this juco left tackle from sweden and the rosa for kid at Northwest Hevesy wanted this guy. That makes me believe he will be pretty good.

Gus Walley - I saw him at camp. Hes a reach. I dont want be ugly but im not sure he will ever be more than a rotation guy. Hopefully he will prove me wrong.

Nick Schuessler - I have never seen him play. I will say this though he is a two star guy that had no significant offers three days before signing day. Its great as a fan base to have hopes for a guy. I have seen David Greene comparisons. Lets be realistic with our expectations. I hope he ends up great. I think he will be a career back up and I think Mullen will recruit past him next year.

Samuel, Bell, Senior, and Ryan Brown I have no idea on these guys as they are all out of state projects. Hopefully one of the four ends up being a diamond in the rough and turns out to be a really good player. If all of them at worst end up role players for us and become good teammates then we will have gotten plenty out of this class.

I welcome all discussion. Lets hear it what do you think?

  • All I can say is I'm glad I didn't have the chance to read your review of last year's class. If I had I would have probably been depressed for a week.

Now we need the raging MSU homer who looks at everything through Maroon glasses to do this same breakdown player by player. I enjoy feeling wooly

  • What I love about recruiting is you really just don't know. Some of these guys you think are sure fire all SEC may end up flaming out. Some of these guys who might be sort of a reach end up being great.
After a year of Balis and SEC level coaching this class might look completely different. I remember Fletcher Cox being a skinny looking kid with some funky sunglasses on in his recruiting picture. Never would have imagined he'd be a 1st/2nd round NFL pick leaving a year early.

  • Just curious, why you think Gus Walley is a stretch, and Donald Lee was a fan of him at the Big Dawg camp?

  • Great breakdown. Other than the reference to Eric "my vagina hurts" Richards, it was a great read. Please don't anyone ever bring up that guys name again. He just screams Croom era!!!!!
