Governors Cup

  • Just got back from the game and if you were one of those fans who felt we were gonna compete for a regional/super regional and beyond then I have news for you. We are not a good team right now and frankly maybe the worst team in over a decade. You baseball experts will chime in and state your rebuttal but it's not gonna change anything. We lack defense at the major positions, hitting(obviously), and I will state the worst team in the SEC. I saw nothing from our team that gives me hope! Sorry about the negativity but be we even had the umps calling pitches in our favor in a major way but we could not capitalize! The Cohen era needs a thorough assessment and that's a shame because I like the guy! There is a reason why we havent dominated a single team this year and our stats will explain that. No catcher, no shortstop, no hitters, no leaders... Sorry...that is all

  • I agree with all you say...Cohen has his work cut out for him...4 years and other teams are winning...Kentucky obviously doesn't miss him. I like Cohen, but something has to improve...we aren't even fun to watch anymore. I have no idea what the problem is, but it needs addressing. I really felt like this season could be the turnaround, too.

Well we have been just about been dead last in fielding and hitting since Cohen got here... pitching has got better but it's still near the lower half of the SEC....his best hitting team was made up of Polk hitters.....that is what people in sports call a trend or you can just blame it on Polk like a hand full of folks are still holding on to.

  • I hold Cohen accountable, seven....Polk has been gone for 4 years. It's past time...I know we've been snakebit with a lot of adversity, but someone must be held accountable...and that falls on the head coach. He's responsible for everything they do and fail to do.

Has anybody ever considered Cohen may not be happy as our coach? Just a simple question...he may be realizing that correcting our program is more than he wants or can handle.

I've wondered about your last question too, but I don't think he's the type person that will step down.

I think Arrow stated it perfectly about our baseball program a week or so back. We compete in one of the nation's toughest divisions against programs that finally decided to pour money and support into their programs. We used to be unique and special when college baseball was an afterthought, but things are a whole lot different now. As far as level of competition, SEC baseball is close to SEC football. I think the reason so many people were frustrated with Stansbury is because SEC basketball has around 8 programs that are consistently WEAK on a national scale and he would have us losing to those teams on a consistent basis. Not to mention the off-court circus.

I must agree that we seem snakebit though. But even if we'd avoided the injury bug, we would be an average to below average baseball team in the SEC.

I don't think folks are blaming Polk for the talent problems today. They, along with me, are blaming him for taking the program down the crapper so far that almost NO ONE could resurrect it. Folks need to face it, our program will never be what it was in the 80's and it will simply take a couple of more generations removed from that era to understand that.

We can be a good ball club and I am not sure that Cohen is the one to do it. Sadly, I have no idea who can get us going at all right now. DN needs renovations and upgrades in the worst way, fans don't support the program like it did during the 80's & 90's, etc. This really looks like the OM basketball program.....a decent (not horrible and not great) team that plays in a mediocre arena that is past its prime.

  • A few are...

Polk #2 down fall was hiring who he did on the pitching end...in 7yrs he had 2 bad yrs his 1'st which wasn't his doing and the last which was(pitching)...5 reg,a Super Reg host,a CWS...42,35,42,37,38 win wins that isn't elite but sure the heck isn't bad! Most of those teams could hit and field just could not pitch....now we can't hit, can't field, pitching is still avg,and bullpen is bad so much so that we have ran a AA closer into the ground.....Polk's down fall was the pitching coach and the handling on that end..he had 5 of his class ranked during those yrs....Cohen down fall is going to be dang near every focal point there is in baseball...and he's had 3 class ranked including his 1'st class that was #3 and had 11 HS signees in it..6 didn't last long on campus(2 got drafted elsewhere),2 haven't played much at all and came to campus hurt(Bricewell and Watson),1 has been awful(Girodo),2 have been up and down till this yr(Stratton and Graveman)...this is the same HS class that had a few including the ones trying to throw off blame from Cohen...that will have us battling upper level in the SEC by 2011 and should be no excuse for it if we are not.

Polk's time was up but what we got hasn't been even as good as Polk #2....
