I've been with H&R Block for about 12 years now. It seems like I'm constantly seeing advertisements for free tax preparation for federal returns online. The word free has always troubled me. Is there a catch? Are these things legit? I mean, I wouldn't mind saving the $350 but don't want to get trapped or tricked into something. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
Turbotax federal online is FREE. Even the poor graduate assistant like myself can afford that one. They will also file your state taxes for $25. It is well worth it imo. I have used this for 3 years now and its pretty painless.
I use Turbo Tax it's not free but it easily walks you through
Several tax prep services offer free prep and e-filing, but it all depends on the complexity of your taxes. The more complex you get with things like sales of stock, rental property income, etc., that's when you'd have to pay for their services.
