Anyone know what that call was about. The guys at my house are all wondering. It really was not explained.
yes. It is rare, but it does happen.
It typically happens when a defender kicks the ball once it is spotted, or when the defender doesn't let the offensive player get up at the end of a play, or the defense will call a timeout when they don't have a timeout to spend, or I think a newer rule is when a defender gets hurt with less than a minute to play in a half/game and the defense has no timeouts...although not sure about this one...it seems like that rule went into effect a few years ago.
Typically, though, for all of the above (except when the defense calls timeout without having a timeout to spend), the official will flag the defense for 15 yards for "unsportsmanlike conduct"....whereas a defensive delay of game is a 5 yard penalty.
